waiting for Godot: how to start a follow-up and... how do you follow EVERYONE?
How often does it happen that you get turned upside down for something that stays with someone else, with an external party, with your team or colleagues, with someone from another department, even with your customer or own boss?
System umbrella
Sometimes this makes you so despondent and powerless that you — under pressure — start applying the system umbrella: it's up to Soraya and I can prove it! If this excuse is accepted - read: encouraged because rewarded - this unfortunately grows into a departmental or — worse — personal habit. Even embedding it in the mental company culture! A completely biological but not immediately productive response, born from a survival mechanism so as not to get turned upside down
.Huge cost, huge loss of business!
The result? Structural loss of energy: time and, above all, motivation, enthusiasm disappear like snow in the sun.
You could already read that in waiting for Godot: how to follow up structurally and practically? and waiting for Godot: how to follow someone up in an understanding but
task-oriented way?In this blog, we look at the jump-start of a succession and take a look in the mirror: how do you follow everyone?
Succession off to a flying start!?
Agood start is half the win, make unconsciously and unaffected agreements at the start and ask the four standard questions below:
- how long do you think you'll be doing it ?
- is the agreed deadline achievable?
- what does it take to get started?
- how can I help you/what else do you need from me?
These questions come from the workshop on delegation techniques, but it's actually just common sense coordination with each other. No one should feel controlled by this, it's even supportive. Of course, how you ask it makes a difference. The title was to follow up on a flying start, not a short
start.Try it out!
Follow everyone?
Do you dare to follow everyone? Not only people who are supposed to provide service to you, but also others?
Many people are afraid to follow up on...
- ...
- to monitor external parties, e.g. suppliers or government - pitfall system umbrella... following up colleagues and peers - pitfall: wanting to avoid conflicts
- ... following the team - pitfall: wanting to be liked
- ... following the boss and the hierarchy - pitfall: the emperor's clothes But also the organizational system - processes and procedures - can cause a lot of
delay! Discussing or questioning practices often scares people off. It's rarely a quick-win and often requires consultation with many others. Nevertheless, this depends on the efficiency and effectiveness of a department or company. Get the bright minds together and find out how things can be even better! on cranes!Everyone is equal before the law! How would it feel if you didn't make a distinction about this? Again: c'est le ton qui fait
la musique!
And then we miss one very, very important person: me, myself and I...
