say no to your boss in a customer-focused way: how to set goals together?
Work flows where it's done!
Indeed, work finds its way to where it happens and once found that path... well, does it have to be drawn
If that's ok for you, no problem!
However, time is scarce and sometimes you want to be able to choose. Especially if you - usually only afterwards - have a bad feeling about saying yes, there is a rational 10-step plan for talking constructively and structurally with the drone driver.
10 steps to a good collaboration
1. Of course, first read or listen to the request - the drone - carefully, without prejudice and sincerely interested:
2. Then ask yourself if you have an agreed goal for this. See the blog being busy like a headless bird: how to set goals & take steps. Do you have a goal for it; continue processing!
3. If you don't have an agreed goal for it, ask yourself who does that goal belong to on the list and you refer it to the right person in a customer-oriented way...
4. is there no person responsible anywhere in the company, ask yourself: do I want & can I do what I'm being asked? If yes, go straight to step 8, if no, read step 5:
5. If you're not interested in the job, try to get out of it in your creative but rational way.
Does it work? Share your technique and let us know!
6. If you are unable to get out of it, rule 1 applies:
RULE 1: the boss is always right. If he's not right, rule 2 applies:
7. RULE 2: if the boss is wrong, see RULE 1 (step 6)
8. Nevertheless, you should then help your boss steer you and ask you - again in a rational and constructive structural way - the following questions: ok, chief, I respect you as the person responsible, a few questions then:
A. What goals of my job do I frame this within?
B. what are the objectives to be achieved for this year?
C. how much time do you want to spend on this at most per week?
D. in case of hectic hustle and bustle: what is the priority compared to the other objectives?
and you keep looking at him/her with neutral intelligence.
9. when your boss has recovered from the shock, make clear agreements either -step 10-...
10.... you can decide for yourself. In either case, it is important that you make a full commitment!
The above may sound a bit unorthodox but... suppose everyone does this consistently from now on.
Which problems would all be prevented?
And action!
- Use the targeting reflex when drones flying around and in!
- Which jobs you are currently working on are not really part of your range of tasks, make new agreements about them!
You as a manager?
- Which drones do you scatter around your department?
- Is extra work distributed properly or is it always the same people who pack in the drones?
- And what about the frustration/energy around this?
